Rank Team Record
1 (4-0)   3

I was wrong – it looks like the Bears have an offence to go with their incredible defence.

2 (4-0)

Somehow they manage to win games – it’s not pretty, but it’s also how New England won 3 Superbowls.

3 (4-0)   2

Won in the last minute of their game, who thought McNair could turn this team around?

4 (3-1)   5

Losing at halftime to the Packers, but held them scoreless in the second half and ran away with it.

5 (3-1)   7

Now that Bledsoe has said that Terry Glenn is the best receiver that he has played with, when does T.O. chuck his tantrum?

6 (3-1)   3

The Bears dominated Seattle in ever facet of the game. I don’t think that having Alexander would have changed the outcome of the game, but it would have been closer.

7 (3-1)   7

Does Tom Brady have a new favorite receiver? Watch out if he does.

8 (3-1)   6

A baffling loss to the Patriots leaves many questions to be answered.

9 (3-1)   2

Michael Vick is the fifth leading rusher in the league; can the Falcons contend when he is a better runner than passer?

10 (2-1)   4

Close loss to the Ravens, but didn’t deserve to win and their offence was ineffective against a tough defence.

11 (2-2)   6

The Redskins offence is kicking in to gear and although they have a 2-2 record, they are looking extremely dangerous.

12 (3-1)   2

Reggie Bush has yet to score, but with Drew Brees behind centre the Saints are going to contend every week.

13 (2-2)   2

Easily the most improved team in the league and could easily be 4-0 at the moment. The Jets are no longer an automatic victory for the top teams in the league.

14 (1-2)   1

Coming off a bye week – hopefully the time off has helped Roethlisberger.

15 (2-2)   8

Have lost the past two games after looking great. Will be looking to get back on track against the Jets this weekend.

16 (2-2)   3

Willis McGahee finally scored a TD for my fantasy team and the Bills defeated a consistent Vikings team.

17 (2-2)   9

Looks like the Vikings will be close in a lot of their games. Some will go their way and come won’t. Against the Bills it didn’t, but against the Lion’s it will.

18 (2-2)

Still need a lot of improvement, but they have the ability to cause teams a lot of problems.

19 (3-1)

They beat Detroit. Big deal.

20 (1-2)   4

Who would have thought that the Giants would be the worst team in the division at this stage in the season?

21 (2-1)   3

I now think their victory over New England was because New England played poorly, not because Denver played well.

22 (2-1)

Didn’t Trent Green get injured and never regain his starting position once before in his career? Don’t know if that will happen this time, but a 41-0 victory against the 49ers will start the rumors.

23 (1-3)

Beat the awful Dolphins while Andre Johnson scored a TD for my fantasy team! David Carr has a 109 QB rating – can he keep that up?

24 (1-3)   1

Looked good for half a game against the Eagles, looked equally as bad in the second half.

25 (1-3)   5

I really thought the 49ers would have pushed the Chiefs, but Alex Smith struggled and the offence just couldn’t get going.

26 (1-3)   2

Losing 21-3, but battled for a 24-21 victory. At least they really aren’t the worst team in the league.

27 (1-3)   1

This team consistently has so much promise, but they always manage to screw-up somehow. Matt Leinart is an improvement over Warner, but he’s not going to be effective straight away.

28 (1-3)   3

With every passing week the Dolphins look worse and worse. Culpepper is definitely not the QB he was two years ago.

29 (0-4)

Albert Haynesworth should have been suspended for the rest of the year and he should spend time in jail for his actions over the weekend.

30 (0-3)

Even coming off the bye week they are going to struggle without their starting QB.

31 (0-4)

The Lion’s offence finally clicked, but as has been the case in recent years the Lion’s found a way to lose the game.

32 (0-3)    What can you say about that loss to the Browns? Not much.

Week 4 Game Predictions

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

Last week I correctly picked the winner in 10 out of 14 games. Here are my picks for round 4.

 24 vs 20

This one could go either way. David Carr currently has the highest QB rating in the NFL, but the Dolphins need to kick into gear sooner or later.

 17 vs 24

It’s going to be tough for the Saints to recover from their emotional victory on Monday night and the Panthers will be looking to continue their winning form. Steve Smith WILL have a big game.

 20 vs 24

The Bills and Vikings have been surprisingly good this year. The only reason I’m picking the Bills is because they are playing at home and Willis McGahee will score some TDs sooner or later (my fantasy team needs it!).

 27 vs 13

The Ravens have a great defence, but the Chargers have LT and I think he will come up big after having last week off. The Chargers defence is nothing to sneeze at either and the fact that the Ravens almost lost to the Browns last week is why I like the Chargers.

 27 vs 24

This is how I see it going down. In the first quarter Kurt Warner fumbles once and throws 2 INTs. Second quarter, Matt Leinart starts his NFL career throws 3 TDs and leads the Cardinals to victory over Michael Vick and the Falcons.

 31 vs 17

Vince Young is making his first start tomorrow, but even though he will throw one TD and rush for another, the Cowboys will win this one comfortably.

 41 vs 10

The Jets have been good this year, but the Colts have been even better. The Colts will establish the run against the Jets and open up the passing game for Peyton Manning who will throw 4 TDs.

 20 vs 21

The 49ers have been impressive so far this year and Alex Smith has been very reliable. The Chiefs have not been impressive and without Trent Green they will struggle. However, the Chiefs still have Larry Johnson and Tony Gonzalez and playing at Arrowhead will help them get the victory.

 24 vs 27

The Lions will put up a little up some offence this weekend because Mike Martz will want to prove something to his old team, but the Rams will have something to prove too and because the Lions suck so much the Rams will get the W.

 13 vs 20

The Jags are coming off a tough loss to the Colts and will struggle against the rejuvenated Redskins. Clinton Portis is in great form and will help the Redskins defeat Jacksonville.

 17 vs 9

Two of the worst teams in the League face each other and someone will get their first win. It won’t be the Raiders.

 20 vs 31

This one had the potential to be a great showdown between two of the leagues best QBs. Even though Tom Brady has no weapons to work with, he will make this game interesting even though the Patriots will go down to the Bengals.

 31 vs 17

The two best teams in the NFC face off in Chicago. Chicago has a great defence, but so does Seattle. The difference is that Seattle also has a great offence while the Bears don’t. The 4 WR sets that the Seahawks used last week against the Giants worked wonders – expect more of that this week.

 21 vs 31

It’s a shame that Brett Favre is on such a bad team because he can still throw the football with the best of them. The Eagles have the advantage of playing at home and having Donovan McNabb. The Eagles win this one on Monday night.

Bye week:

Week 3 NFL Power Rankings

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006
Rank Team Record
1 (3-0)    Were not impressive and still defeated one of the best teams in the AFC.
2 (3-0)   Also didn’t play well, but found a way to defeat the defending Superbowl champs.
3 (3-0)   The game was over at the end of the first quarter. The score was made respectable in the fourth quarter once the Seahawks defence fell asleep.
4 (3-0)   A hard fought victory against a Minnesota team that was really impressive.
5 (3-0)   Take a fall in the rankings this week. Barely escaped a loss to the lowly Browns.
6 (2-0)   Coming off the bye week, but will be tested by Baltimore.
7 (2-1)   Played better than the Colts, but couldn’t pull out the victory.
8 (2-1)   I was surprised by the way the Vikings played, really tested the highly fancied Bears.
9 (2-1)   McNabb is for real. Westbrook is a stud.
10 (3-0)   Every win makes Miami look even more foolish for passing on Brees.
11 (2-1)   Couldn’t overcome the emotion in the Superdome and their run game was stifled by an underrated New Orleans defence.
12 (1-1)   T.O. should be alright to play (and pad his stats) against Tennessee.
13 (1-2)   Need to finish out games to be successful. Roethlisberger still doesn’t look good, but thankfully they have a bye this weekend.
14 (2-1)   When the Patriots fell behind, you could really tell that Tom Brady needs some decent Wide Receivers – not Tight Ends.
15 (2-1)   Second place in the AFC East – who would have predicted that?
16 (1-2)   Losing 35-3 at halftime against Seattle. Totally outplayed and looked out of sorts.
17 (1-2)   Looks like they really missed Clinton Portis – two TD’s and a victory on his return to the team.
18 (1-2)   Were Denver impressive on Sunday night or were New England really that bad? I’m not sure.
19 (1-2)   Willis McGahee – 150 rushing yards and no TD’s? You’re killing my fantasy team.
20 (1-2)   Alex Smith – no INT’s and a 89.8 QB rating.
21 (1-2)   Gritty win against the Bucs, but this is no Superbowl bound team.
22 (2-1)   Kurt Warner wins another game for St Louis. Pity he plays for Arizona now.
23 (1-2)   If only they could play the Lions every week.
24 (0-2)   After their bye week, they face the 49ers. If they can’t challenge them, they will be in for a long season.
25 (1-2)    They’re not winning with Culpepper, maybe it’s time for Joey?
26 (1-2)   Warner botched a certain victory, yet Coach Green keeps Matt Leinart on the bench for this weekend. Why?
27 (0-3)   Andre Johnson – 150 receiving yards and no TD’s. You’re killing my fantasy team too.
28 (0-3)   Only lost on a field goal with 20 seconds yet – against a far more fancied Baltimore team.
29 (0-3)   I predicted that Tennessee would get smashed by the Dolphins – I was wrong. The Dolphins are so bad, they made Kerry Collins look like John Elway.
30 (0-3)   Lost the game and then lost their QB for a considerable amount of time. They have no-one of note to fill that position.
31 (0-3)   Words cannot describe how utterly disgraceful the Lions organization is. They could field a Pro Bowl team and still lose.
32 (0-2)    But the Lions would probably still beat the Raiders. What does that say?

Week 3 Game Predictions

Friday, September 22nd, 2006
10 vs 31  What a dream matchup for the struggling Culpepper. If he is ever going to break out of his form slump, it will be against the Titans - expect a big game.
13 vs 27  Jacksonville is playing well, but they won’t be good enough to prevent Peyton Manning from dictating terms.
17 vs 24  Houston will continue the woes for the Redskins and effectively ruin any playoff chance they have.
31 vs 17  If any team will make the Packers look like Superbowl contenders, it will be the awful Lions.
10 vs 17  The Jets have been looking good, but the Bills have been looking even better. Expect Willis McGahee to have a huge game for the Bills.
24 vs 17  Carolina gets their first win of the season with or without Steve Smith. Tampa Bay are just awful at the moment.
31 vs 17  Will the Steelers be as bad as they were on Monday night? It doesn’t matter because the Bengals win this match either way.
24 vs 6  Chicago will separate themseleves from their competition in the NFC North.
20 vs 3  Another impressive performance can be guaranteed from the Ravens. Will Kellen Winslow Jr be able to keep his fat mouth shut once he is shut out again?
21 vs 31  Expect Deion Branch to play a role in the outcome of this match as he will want to prove that he was worth the cash. Seahawks are tough to beat in Seattle and should win a closely fought game.
27 vs 17  In a battle of the teams that hate T.O., McNabb & Co. outlast the resurgent 49ers.
20 vs 38  Arizona will have their offence firing on cylinders and St Louis will not have any answer for it. Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin will have over 100 receiving yards each.
10 vs 24  Jake Plummer will continue to struggle and the New England defence will create problems for him all night.
20 vs 27  Going out on a limb here with this upset pick, but if any team will be motivated this weekend it will be the Saints who are returning to the Superdome for the first time since Hurricane Katrina. Reggie Bush will also get the first TD of his career.
Bye week:

Week 2 NFL Power Rankings

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006
Rank Team Record
1 (2-0) 1 Peyton Manning: 400 yards and 3 TD’s. Personally, my fantasy team needs Marvin Harrison to haul in a few TD’s!
2 (2-0) 1 2 games and only 6 points allowed. Now that McNair is running the offence the Ravens will be tough to beat.
3 (2-0) 1 Congrats Rex Grossman 4 TD’s and you ended the Lion’s season after 2 games.
4 (2-0) 1 Michael Vick had more rushing yards than passing yards and Atlanta had over 300 rushing yards combined. All against a team that was supposed to be a stud defence.
5 (2-0) 1 It seems so long ago that people were actually worried about how Carson Palmer would play this season.
6 (2-0) 1 Seattle’s defence won them their game against Arizona. The offence needs to improve if they want to reach the Superbowl again.
7 (2-0) 3 This game was over at halftime. Unfortunately for me, LT is my fantasy team stud and if the game had have been closer, he would have scored at least another two TD’s.
8 (2-0) 4 For the first time since 1981 a defending Superbowl champion was held to zero points in the year they are defending their title. Is it too early to say that Ben Roethlisberger looks like a different quarterback (and that’s not a good thing!)?
9 (1-1) Eli Manning took the Giants on his shoulders and led them to an unlikely win against the Eagles after trailing by 17 in the fourth quarter.
10 (1-1) 9 Looked awful in their game. 26 rushing yards and 141 passing. Their first 8 possessions resulted in 8 punts. Doesn’t look good at the moment.
11 (2-0) Built a substantial lead against the Jets, but almost blew it. We’ll see what type of backbone the team has when they play some of the more elite teams.
12 (2-0) 3 Two solid efforts so far. Can anyone believe that Jon Gruden let Brad Johnson walk?
13 (1-1) Bledsoe has put the calls for Romo to rest - for the time being at least.
14 (1-1) 7 Blew a 17 point lead in the fourth quarter. McNabb looks like he will be back to being a stud this year though.
15 (2-0) 3 It looks like the worst call of the year will be Miami deciding to take Culpepper instead of Drew Brees. Saints look good.
16 (1-1) 5 This team could easily be 2-0 right now, but as it stands they embarrassed the Dolphins over the weekend.
17 (1-1) 5 Pennington looks good again.
18 (1-1) 2 Warner needs more protection from the offensive line if he is to be effective.
19 (1-1) 8 Alex Smith is finally showing the potential.
20 (1-1) 1 Anyone who loses to the rebuilding 49ers should expect a long year.
21 (1-1) 5 What happened to Jake Plummer?
22 (0-2) 6 Regret taking Mario Williams #1 overall yet?
23 (0-2) Can Steve Smith really be THAT important to this team?
24 (0-2) 7 With Portis back in the lineup, the Redskins should be improved.
25 (0-2) 11 It’s so bad, that even the crowd was shouting for Joey.
26 (0-2) 2 Larry Johnson has yet to score a Touchdown. To the people in my fantasy league, thank you for letting LT slip to #3.
27 (0-2) 5 Favre looked somewhat good, but he was playing the Saints.
28 (0-2) 3 Chris Simms career has definitely hit a BIG bump in the road.
29 (0-2) Will drop to 0-3 after this weekend.
30 (0-2) 10 Can any quarterback succeed while they play in Detroit? No passing touchdowns? Kevin Jones is useless too.
31 (0-2) 1 Kerry Collins blows - expect to see Vince being the one hammered by defences soon.
32 (0-2) 1 The worst team in football - easily.

Post Week 1 NFL Power Rankings

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

Week 1 Top 16:

1. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0) - Defending Super Bowl champs lose starting quarterback, but still come out and dismantle the supposed Super Bowl contender, Miami Dolphins.
2. Indianapolis Colts (1-0) - Peyton outlasts little brother, Eli. They’ll need a better running game to be a serious contender this year.
3. Baltimore Ravens (1-0) - Whoa. Look out for their defence this year. Shut-out Tampa Bay (a playoff team last year) at Tampa Bay - impressive.
4. Chicago Bears (1-0) - Most hyped defence in the league, prevents Green Bay from scoring a point for the first time in 15 years.
5. Atlanta Falcons (1-0) - Made every critics NFC pick to make the Super Bowl, Carolina Panthers, look like a high school team.
6. Cincinatti Bengals (1-0) - Looked good against a potent Kansas City offence.
7. Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) - T.O. who? Stallworth will fill the void without the drama.
8. Seattle Seahawks (1-0) - Either Detroits defence is superb or the Seahawks are going to be ordinary this year. The signing of Deion Branch will boost a sub-par receiving corp.
9. New York Giants (0-1) - If Eli Manning can maintain the level of play he displayed against the Colts, it will be a very good year for New York
10. San Diego Chargers (1-0) - Will LaDainian Tomlinson be able to handle the workload this year? My fantasy football team sure hopes so!
11. New England Patriots (1-0) - Bad start against Buffalo, first play from scrimage resulted in a Buffalo defensive touchdown, but you can never write off a team that has Tom Brady as their quarterback. However, the loss of Deion Branch will hurt the Pats this year.
12. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0) - Came from behind to defeat the more fancied Dallas team. A sign of things to come or a flash in the pan?
13. Dallas Cowboys (0-1) - Allowed 17 unanswered points against Jacksonville. After one week and there are already calls for quaterback, Drew Bledsoe’s head. When will T.O. join the chorus?
14. Miami Dolphins (0-1) - Daunte Culpepper looked rusty in the opener, but there is still hope that this team will win the AFC East.
15. Minnesota Vikings (1-0) - Quarterback Brad Johnson did what he needed to do to earn the victory, but he has an inexperienced receiving corp which could prove troublesome as the season progresses.
16. Arizona Cardinals (1-0) - Their offence was never going to be an issue, but if you give up 27 points to San Francisco, you won’t be able to score enough points against a good team in order to win.

The rest:

17. Washington Redskins (0-1)
18. New Orleans Saints (1-0)
19. St Louis Rams (1-0)
20. Detroit Lions (0-1)
21. Buffalo Bills (0-1)
22. New York Jets (1-0)
23. Carolina Panthers (0-1)
24. Kansas City Chiefs (0-1)
25. Tampa Bay Bucaneers (0-1)
26. Denver Broncos (0-1)
27. San Francisco 49ers (0-1)
28. Houston Texans (0-1)
29. Cleveland Browns (0-1)
30. Tennessee Titans (0-1)
31. Oakland Raiders (0-1)
32. Green Bay Packers (0-1)

Reggie Bush $$$

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Vince Young, the #3 overall pick in this years NFL draft signed his rookie contract today, preventing a holdout that might have occurred when the Tennessee Titans open their training camp tomorrow. Young signed a five-year contract (the sixth year is an option) with a guaranteed $25.7 million. The contract is potentially worth $58 million if other performance bonuses are met - more than the contract #1 overall pick Mario Williams signed.

Vince Young has at least 25.7 million reasons to smile

Reggie Bush (who should have been the #1 overall pick) wasn’t going to take less money than what Williams got ($54 million over 6 years), and he certainly won’t take less than what the pick below him got. It is rumoured that the New Orleans owner promised Bush a contract that was identical to Williams’ moments after the New Orleans Saints took Bush with the #2 overall pick. New Orleans and Bush are still hashing out a contract, but New Orleans talks no doubt just got harder after Vince Young’s contract details were released. The Saints need to sign Bush more than Bush needs to sign with them (as horrible as that sounds). I have a feeling that Bush definitely won’t take anything less than a $60 million contract, but time will most definitely tell what happens. If Bush wants to play hardball, he doesn’t have to sign and can re-enter next year’s draft, but New Orleans doesn’t want to lose the most talented player in years and will definitely show him the cash.

Saints fans will be hoping to see Bush in action this year

I can’t get my head around the amount of money professional athletes make in the U.S. (NFL, MLB, NBA). What is even worse is the amount of players that complain about their financial situation being a disaster. Giving rookies big contracts like this is part of the problem. They haven’t done anything to prove their professional worth, but many of them are signing contracts that guarantee them millions upon millions of dollars. If a player proves their worth, then I’m all for them cashing in, but to see players bicker with teams over money before they have actually played professionally is disgusting. The NFL should introduce a payscale for rookies that is similar to that of the NBA. NBA rookies know what they are going to make as soon as they are drafted; however, the NBA has guaranteed contracts, whereas the NFL does not - another reason rookies try to get as much as they can in the beginning.

A short heartwarmer

Friday, June 2nd, 2006

Thanks to Jim for passing this article on to me. He obviously knows that I’m a sucker for a feel-good story. After reading this article, I challenge anyone to find another NFL player who spends their offseason working three days a week in a hospital, drawing blood and helping patients go to the bathroom. I should clarify that statement - an NFL player who isn’t serving community service.

Unfortunately, after a breakout year in which he came from nowhere to appear in eight games for the Packers, Gado probably won’t be seeing much playing time this year or maybe ever again. I hope he will have a successful and fulfilling career in the medical field if his NFL dream doesn’t come true.

Some answers finally

Monday, May 15th, 2006

While doing the morning rounds of the sports sites that I visit regularly, I came across a two-part article (part 1 & part 2) that details an interview with Joey Harrington following his departure from the Detroit Lions.

Now while it has been said that I have biased feelings towards Harrington (I drafted him in my previous two fantasy league teams), it was good to finally hear how he felt about the way he was treated while in Detroit. He admits that he played poorly, but he also points out (correctly) that he was not the only player that played poorly and that he was unfairly made the scapegoat for the organization. When asked about his thoughts on when ex-coach Steve Mariucci had lost confidence in him, he offerred this:

There was an incident. It was about halfway through my third season. I went into his office to talk with him. I said, “Coach, I need you to give me permission to throw the ball downfield. To take some shots downfield. I feel like I can’t.” He said, “I don’t know where you’re getting that idea.” I said, “You tell me every day if there’s any chance of a mistake, pull it back, check down. I feel roped in. Let me take some chances.” He stood up, went to his sink and started brushing his teeth. He said, “I’ve got to go do some interviews. If you want to talk about this, come back later.”

And then he walked out.

I look back on that now and it seems like such a defining moment. But at the time, I was so focused on making him happy, on getting in his good graces, I just let it go.

I hardly feel that this is the right way for a coach to treat his quarterback - a quarterback that had no offensive line, no running game, and no support from anyone in the organisation. He was brought in to help turn the franchise around but was unsuccessful in doing so. He did, however, handle himself with poise and professionalism while under fire from the fans, the media, and his teammates. It was good to finally hear how he really felt about his treatment in Detroit - I hope Harrington finds the success he deserves while he is in Miami.

Miskates made, steals to be had

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

Of course, drafts are truly analysed a few seasons after they take place, but I believe there will be a few teams that will regret the choices they made in today’s NFL draft. Houston drafted a solid player in Mario Williams, but passing up Reggie Bush is going to turn out to be a big mistake. Bush is the most electric player in the draft and will have the biggest impact of any player going to any team. New Orleans must not have been able to hold in their excitement when Houston passed on Bush - it didn’t take them long to get their pick to Commissioner Tagliabue.

Other teams that made bad picks include Buffalo and every team who passed on Lendale White starting from pick 20. The guy is going to be an impact player in the league, and unfortunately for him, he had an injury at the wrong time and it affected his position in the draft. I think he is going to be extremely motivated to prove all the teams who passed on him wrong. I expect him to have a great year for Tennessee.

Baltimore got some help on the defensive line with Haloti Ngata. He has been criticised leading up to the draft because he has taken the occassional play off by not giving a 100% effort. There won’t be any problem of that happening in Baltimore because Ray Lewis will be on him as soon as he notices Ngata slacking off. Watching Ngata play college football with Oregon, I was impressed with his ability to make a difference in the game. Multiple times he blocked point after conversion attempts and punts, and shrugged off multiple offensive lineman to get to the quarterback. This was a great pick for Baltimore, and I think he will have an immediate impact on their team.

The team that really lucked out was the Arizona Cardinals. Matt Leinart is a great pickup for that team, and he will be starting for them as soon as Dennis Green gets sick of Kurt Warner. Because Leinart is the most NFL-ready of all the quarterbacks in the draft, I don’t think being thrown in at the deep end will be bad for him - especially with a supporting cast of running back Edgerrin James and wide receivers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald. Hopefully the Cardinals will be able to get some offensive line help so Leinart won’t be under pressure every down. Although Oakland drafted a solid defensive player in Michael Huff, they have the unreliable Aaron Brooks as their quarterback, and Leinart would have been a definite improvement in that area.
